Author’s Note
This booklet is as a simplified guide to Muslim practices during the holy month of Ramadan. I have prepared the book for Muslims and non-Muslims alike, hoping that non-Muslims will find this a helpful window into our religious traditions – and Muslims will use this as a refresher in recalling the richness of our faith.
Non-Muslim readers will find not only the heart of Ramadan in this book, but also many of our specific religious customs, such as adding “(pbuh)” after mentioning the name the prophetic founder of Islam. We try to be as respectful as possible in approaching our faith and the (pbuh) notation is our reminder that, when we recall his name, we always add: “peace be upon him.” We also do this with other great prophets including Abraham (pbuh), Moses (pbuh) and Jesus (pubh). So, as you read this guide, you’ll find not only the core story of Ramadan, but you’ll also see how we approach and live out our religious traditions day by day.
That approach also makes this handbook useful for teachers, students, interfaith leaders, health-care workers and other professionals who wish to encourage and discuss the similarities between various cultures and faiths. You can join in the ongoing dialogue by visiting www.SharingRamadan.info
