Favorite Jokes for Tough Times

QUESTION:

Got a joke to share?

Why This Matters:

We all know the line from Reader’s Digest. Well, Stephen Colbert updated it to make the case for sharing our humor: “I would say laughter is the best medicine. But it’s more than that. It’s an entire regime of antibiotics and steroids.”

Among the writers contributing to WeAreCaregivers, the humorist among us is Rodney Curtis, best known as the Spiritual Wanderer because of his first book of real-life humor and his weekly columns under that title. Rodney earned his right to crack jokes with caregivers the hard way: He survived life-threatening cancer, while losing his job in the recent recession at the same time his daughters were getting ready to start college. Talk about laughing in the face of frustration and fear! Rodney’s new book, coming later in 2012, is A ‘Cute’ Leukemia. Rodney puts it this way: “Why humor? Because nothing makes cancer madder than belittling it and pinching its darling baby cheeks.”

I encourage caregivers to arm themselves with jokes and other forms of humor. If you don’t think you’re naturally funny, then write down a few good lines and carry them with you.

Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.

Victor Borge

Mirth is God’s medicine. Everybody ought to bathe in it.

Henry Ward Beecher

The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. … If God is watching us, the least we can do is be entertaining. … Hospitality is making your guests feel like they’re at home—even if you wish they were.
